Over 200 local residents gathered at George Little Park as it came alive with bursts of color, laughter, and music as the local community celebrated Holi, the Hindu festival of colors. Known as the "Festival of Colors," Holi is a joyous occasion that marks the arrival of spring, celebrates the triumph of good over evil, and fosters unity and love among participants. This year’s event in Terrace was a vibrant testament to the growing cultural diversity in the region, bringing together residents of all backgrounds in a shared celebration of joy and renewal.

The festivities kicked off 1 pm at George Little Park, a central gathering spot in Terrace, where organizers transformed the area into a kaleidoscope of colors. Participants, ranging from young children to seniors, arrived dressed in white, ready to be doused in the traditional colored powders known as "gulal." The air was thick with clouds of pink, blue, green, and yellow as revelers tossed handfuls of powder at one another, accompanied by laughter and cheers.

“I am having so much fun. I can't wait to take part again next year. Said one participant. “Seeing so many people from different backgrounds come together here in Terrace to celebrate this festival is truly great.

The event featured a variety of cultural elements, including traditional Indian music, with upbeat Bollywood and Bhangra tracks encouraging spontaneous dancing among the crowd. A highlight of the day was a performance by local youth, who showcased a fusion of traditional Indian folk dances and contemporary choreography, earning enthusiastic applause from the audience. They were joined by a mysterious figure called "Terrace Batman".

In keeping with Holi traditions, the festival also included the sharing of delicious food and sweets. Volunteers set up stalls offering an array of treats, such as gujiya (a sweet dumpling filled with khoya and nuts), mathri (crispy crackers), and thandai (a spiced milk drink). For many attendees, this was an opportunity to experience the rich culinary heritage of India.

The significance of Holi extends beyond its colorful revelry, rooted in Hindu mythology and stories of renewal and triumph. One of the most well-known legends associated with Holi is the tale of Prahlad and Holika, symbolizing the victory of good over evil. The night before Holi, known as Holika Dahan, is traditionally marked by the lighting of bonfires to commemorate this story.

This year’s Holi celebration in Terrace also emphasized inclusivity and environmental consciousness. Organizers ensured the use of eco-friendly, non-toxic colored powders, addressing concerns about the environmental impact of traditional Holi powders. Additionally, the event welcomed participation from people of all faiths and backgrounds, with many first-time attendees expressing delight at the warm and inclusive atmosphere.

The Terrace Holi celebration reflects a broader trend of growing cultural festivals in smaller Canadian communities, as immigration and multiculturalism continue to enrich local traditions. While Holi is a national holiday in India and widely celebrated in South Asian diaspora communities, its appeal has increasingly crossed cultural boundaries, drawing diverse crowds eager to partake in its universal message of joy and unity.

For now, the 2025 Holi Festival of Colors in Terrace will be remembered as a day of laughter, connection, and vibrant celebration, proving once again that the spirit of Holi can thrive anywhere—even in the heart of northern British Columbia.

Notable attendees were Ellis Ross. The Conservative Party Candidate for Member of Parliament in the upcoming spring federal election. Also seen amongst the crowd was Terrace Batman. Local superhero and Tik Tok star. Terrace Batman spent his time having his photo taken with many people. One mother was very appreciative of Batman taking the time to take a photo with her young daughter.
